Proletariat, which is known for its battle royale game Spellbreak, has been acquired by Blizzard Entertainment to expand its staff working on its massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft. This is according to a report by GamesBeat, which says that the Proletariat team of 100 people will start working on Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, including the Dragonflight expansion that is set to come this year. The two companies have been working together since May.

Mike Ybarra, president of Blizzard Entertainment said the following about the acquisition:

“We are putting players at the forefront of everything we do, and we are working hard to both meet and exceed their expectations. A big part of caring for our teams is making sure we have the resources to produce experiences our communities will love while giving our teams space to explore even more creative opportunities within their projects. Proletariat is a perfect fit for supporting Blizzard’s mission in bringing high-quality content to our players more often.”

Meanwhile, Spellbreak, the magic-based battle royale from Proletariat announced in a blog post on June 28 that it’s going to shut down the game’s servers for good next year. Seth Sivak, CEO of Proletariat, admitted that the game was unable to expand its player base, which is what battle royale games need for them to succeed:

“Spellbreak was a critical success, and we felt like we really delivered something fresh in the battle royale genre. There is a lot of competition in that area, where you are competing with some of the biggest games in the world. We just couldn’t get the escape velocity necessary for us to continue to expand it.”

Spellbreak, which came out four years ago, had failed to reach the same success that other games in the genre enjoy. It became the latest entrant in the growing list of battle royale titles that failed to make any waves. Ubisoft’s Hyperspace also announced its shutdown a couple of months ago.
